macOS Tahoe

macOS Tahoe is the marketing name for macOS version 26, the most recent major release of Apple's operating system for Mac computers. Following Apple's tradition, it is named after a prominent California landmark, Lake Tahoe.

It was announced at WWDC 2025 and released in September 2025. It is the successor to macOS Sequoia (version 15).

Key Features of macOS Tahoe (Version 26)

macOS Tahoe introduced several major changes, focusing on a visual overhaul, enhanced system search, and deeper continuity features.

1. Liquid Glass Design

Tahoe introduced the Liquid Glass design language, bringing a refreshed, translucent look across the interface:

• Transparent Menu Bar: The menu bar now blends more seamlessly into the desktop wallpaper.

• Translucent Elements: Refined docks and toolbars with greater translucency, allowing background colors to show through.

• Customization: New appearance settings allow users to customize folder colors and use "Tinted" and "Clear" styles for a greater level of personalization.

2. Overhauled Spotlight Search

Spotlight received its biggest update, leveraging Apple Intelligence (AI) to make it more powerful:

• Intelligent Ranking: Search results are ranked more intelligently based on context and relevance to the user's workflow.

• Feature Search: Users can now search for and launch specific features within applications directly from Spotlight.

• Natural Language: Improved ability to understand complex, natural language queries.

3. Expanded Continuity Features

New features enhance the Mac's integration with the iPhone:

• Phone App: A dedicated Phone app was added to the Mac, allowing users to make and take calls, access voicemail, and utilize new features like Call Screening directly on their computer.

• Live Activities Mirroring: Live Activities from the user's iPhone (like food delivery tracking or sports scores) are now mirrored onto the Mac's menu bar.

• Automatic Hotspot: Mac can automatically join the iPhone's Personal Hotspot when no Wi-Fi network is available.

4. Important Compatibility Note

During the announcement of macOS Tahoe, Apple confirmed that this would be the last major version of macOS to support Intel-based Macs. While some newer Intel models are supported by Tahoe, the successor to macOS Tahoe is expected to be Apple Silicon-only.
