Audulus 3 was a pivotal version of the modular audio environment developed by Audulus LLC, designed for macOS and iOS/iPadOS. Positioned as a visual programming language for sound, it allowed musicians, sound designers, and audio enthusiasts to build and design their own virtual synthesizers, audio effects, and generative soundscapes using a node-based patching system. It successfully brought the complex, flexible workflow of hardware modular synthesis (like Eurorack) into the digital realm, optimized for both touchscreens and desktop use.

Core Philosophy: Node-Based Modular Synthesis

The entire Audulus experience is built around the concept of nodes.

  • Nodes as Building Blocks: Every element—from a simple oscillator or filter to an envelope generator, mixer, or math function—is represented by a node.

  • Visual Signal Flow: Users connect these nodes by dragging wires between the blue inputs (left side) and red outputs (right side) on the canvas. This graphical representation makes the abstract concepts of signal flow and modulation tangible, offering a great learning tool for those new to synthesis.

  • Patching and Grouping: Users could start from the most fundamental nodes to design complex systems from scratch. Once a functional section (like an ADSR envelope or a complete VCO) was built, it could be lassoed and grouped into a higher-level module. This process allowed for the creation of reusable, professional-grade instruments and effects, essentially allowing users to invent their own custom gear.

Key Features of Audulus 3

Audulus 3 introduced or refined several features that solidified its reputation as a serious sound design tool:

  • Cross-Platform Consistency: Patches created on an iPad could sync and be used seamlessly on a Mac (and vice-versa via iCloud), providing a highly mobile and uninterrupted workflow.

  • Low-Latency Audio: The application was built from the ground up to handle professional-grade audio processing with low latency, making it suitable for live performance and complex, CPU-intensive patches.

  • Multichannel Support: It featured full MIDI support and arbitrary multichannel signal flow for advanced polyphony and integration with external studio setups (including CV workflows).

  • DSP Scripting: For experts, the inclusion of a DSP Node allowed for custom, lower-level code to be written using the Lua programming language, extending the capabilities beyond the default node library.

Audulus 3 was highly praised for its clean, fluid interface and its ability to act as a powerful sonic playground. It was later succeeded by Audulus 4, which further improved performance, added AUv3 plugin support for hosts, and introduced new features like the Canvas Node for custom UI design.

iOS/iPadOS (Minimum): iOS 9.3 or later (older versions were supported at launch).
iOS/iPadOS (Recommended): iPhone 5 or later; 4th Generation iPad or later for complex patches.
macOS (Final Version): macOS 10.14 (Mojave) or later was required for its later updates.
CPU/RAM: Performance was highly dependent on the complexity of the patches, with modern multi-core processors being necessary for low-latency, high-node count designs.
Note: The current version, Audulus 4, requires much newer operating systems (iOS 18.0 / macOS 14.6 or later).
