Radio Silence

Radio Silence is a minimalist, outbound firewall and network monitoring application designed exclusively for macOS.

It is highly praised for being simple, lightweight, and effective at preventing applications from "phoning home"—that is, blocking unwanted outgoing internet connections.

Core Function and Philosophy

Radio Silence is designed as a direct solution to a major privacy concern: apps secretly connecting to the internet without user permission for updates, analytics, or licensing checks.

• Outbound Firewall: The main job is to block outgoing connections from specific applications. Unlike the built-in macOS firewall, which only controls incoming connections, Radio Silence gives you control over what leaves your Mac.

• Simple Blocklist: Its operation is straightforward: you simply add an application (or one of its hidden helper processes/daemons) to the blocklist with a single click, and it will be permanently prevented from accessing the internet.

• "Silent" Operation: True to its name, Radio Silence runs invisibly in the background. It does not clutter the screen or menu bar, and, crucially, it does not generate the constant, annoying pop-ups that more complex firewalls (like Little Snitch) are known for. It's a true "set it and forget it" tool for privacy minimalists.

• Real-Time Monitor: While the firewall itself is silent, the application includes a Network Monitor tab that shows you every active network connection being made by apps and processes on your Mac, allowing you to easily identify and block any misbehaving app.
