Black Geyser: Couriers of Darkness is an isometric, party-based fantasy RPG developed by GrapeOcean Technologies. Heavily inspired by classic computer role-playing games (CRPGs) of the late 90s, particularly the Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale series, it seeks to deliver a traditional high-fantasy adventure while introducing a unique morality mechanic centered around greed.

Setting and Story: The Curse of Greed

The game is set in the world of Yerengal, a land plagued by war, pestilence, and the insidious influence of dark gods. For centuries, the devil-god Rothgor spread fear, but the current threat comes from his union with Zornilsa, the goddess of Greed.

They unleashed the Black Geyser, a dark magical phenomenon that subtly corrupts the mortal races, poisoning their minds and driving the kingdom of Isilmerald to the brink of civil war. The player begins as a sole survivor of an attack, eventually discovering a hidden legacy tied to the Black Geyser and the fate of Yerengal. Your mission is to uncover the truth and either advance the cause of the goddess of greed or maintain the flickering flame of hope in the world.

 Classic CRPG Gameplay

Black Geyser adheres closely to the traditional CRPG formula in its core mechanics:

  • Real-Time Tactical Combat with Pause: Combat plays out in real-time, but players can, and must, frequently pause the action to issue commands, queue up spells, and strategically position their party members to control the flow of battle.

  • Deep Character Creation: Players create their own protagonist, choosing from five playable races (Human, Dwarf, Elf, Feldegug, and Rillow) and 13 unique classes across four groups (Priest, Outlaw, Warrior, and Wizard). The class system features an old-school progression where different classes level up at different rates, similar to early editions of Dungeons & Dragons.

  • Party and Exploration: The player recruits a team of unique, memorable companions, each with their own story and motivations. Exploration is non-linear, allowing players to wander through wilderness areas, small towns, and large cities to uncover side quests and advance the main narrative.

The Greed Mechanic

The game's most distinguishing feature is the Greed System, which acts as a dynamic morality gauge:

  • Moral Choices: Actions taken throughout the game, particularly those involving monetary gain or refusal of excessive rewards, influence a Greed Bar for both the party and the world at large.

  • Consequences: Choosing to refuse payment for a quest or donating generously decreases Greed, while demanding exorbitant rewards increases it. This Greed level subtly impacts the game world, reflecting the moral decay or virtue of the land.

Black Geyser is a love letter to the isometric fantasy RPGs of the 90s, offering a blend of nostalgic gameplay and a unique moral challenge rooted in the vice of avarice.
