Caves of Lore is a sprawling, party-based fantasy role-playing game developed by solo independent developer, Michael Fesser. Designed as a spiritual successor to classic CRPGs of the late 1990s and early 2000s, the game emphasizes deep character customization, complex turn-based combat, and non-linear exploration across a vast, intricate fantasy world. It is a game built for those who appreciate detailed mechanics over modern streamlined experiences.

Party and Class Customization

The core appeal of Caves of Lore lies in its extreme character customization. At the start, players create a party of up to six adventurers, meticulously designing each one from the ground up. The game features 12 distinct character classes (such as the heavily armored Guardian, the magic-wielding Sorcerer, the flexible Rogue, or the nature-focused Druid) and 12 different races (including Humans, Elves, Dwarves, and the more exotic Saurian).

The depth is further enhanced by an extensive skill system. Characters gain experience and spend points across a massive tree of over 100 skills and abilities, allowing for intricate multiclassing and highly specialized builds. It is possible to create a heavily armored priest who specializes in defensive wards and mace combat, or a fast rogue who combines stealth with debilitating curse spells. This freedom ensures that no two playthroughs will feature the exact same party composition or combat strategy.

 Tactical Turn-Based Combat

Combat is a demanding, grid-based, turn-based affair. Battles require careful planning, as positioning, line-of-sight, and the strategic application of status effects are critical for victory. Players must manage their party's unique abilities, paying close attention to energy and cooldowns to maximize damage output while controlling the battlefield.

A key feature of the combat system is the reliance on detailed itemization and crafting. The sheer number of equippable items with random modifiers ensures that every new piece of loot is potentially a vital upgrade. Furthermore, the robust Crafting System allows players to gather materials and forge customized gear, further strengthening their party and compensating for any weaknesses in their build composition.

 A Non-Linear World

The game’s world is massive and encourages non-linear exploration. Players are not strictly guided along a set path; instead, they are given broad objectives and left to discover the secrets, dungeons, and side quests of the world at their own pace.

The narrative focuses on a quest to restore ancient power and confront a looming threat, but the story is largely told through environmental lore, dialogue choices, and the numerous side stories encountered. With hundreds of unique NPCs and challenging, hidden bosses, Caves of Lore provides a challenging, rewarding, and highly customizable journey into the heart of classic CRPG design.
