DELTARUNE is a unique and highly anticipated title from Toby Fox, the creator of the indie phenomenon Undertale. While sharing a distinct visual style and philosophical complexity with its predecessor, DELTARUNE stands on its own as a parallel story, often described as Chapter 2 of a larger, ongoing saga. It begins with the player controlling Kris, a quiet human resident of a small, seemingly ordinary town.

The narrative quickly shifts when Kris and their antagonistic classmate, Susie, unexpectedly fall into a mysterious realm known as the Dark World. Here, they meet Ralsei, a prince from a prophecy, and learn that they are the legendary "Heroes" destined to seal the Dark Fountains and restore balance between the two worlds. This premise immediately sets a more defined, linear course compared to the ambiguous choices of Undertale.

Gameplay and Ethical Combat

The gameplay in DELTARUNE expands upon the unique blend of RPG mechanics and bullet-hell action that defined Undertale. Combat is turn-based, but features the familiar, fast-paced "soul" dodging sections during enemy attacks. However, a major departure is the inclusion of a party system, with Kris, Susie, and Ralsei each having unique combat roles:

• Kris: The primary attacker and the character the player controls on the field.

• Susie: A powerful physical attacker, focusing on high-damage Hack and Rude attacks.

• Ralsei: The dedicated healer, using Pacify spells and providing support.

Crucially, while you can defeat enemies through violence, DELTARUNE heavily encourages the non-lethal approach. You must often work as a team, using specific Act commands to set up an enemy to be spared. Susie, who initially prefers brute force, slowly learns the value of mercy, which is reflected in new combat options and character development.

Thematic Depth and Tone

Despite its bright, charming sprites and whimsical humor, DELTARUNE explores darker, more unsettling themes than Undertale. The concept of player control vs. free will is central. Unlike Undertale, where your choices fundamentally altered the world, DELTARUNE constantly reminds the player that their choices don't matter, suggesting a predetermined path or a lack of agency over Kris's actions outside of combat. The protagonist, Kris, is notably less expressive and often acts independently of the player's wishes, creating an intriguing dissonance.

With two chapters currently released (and more promised), DELTARUNE is a gorgeously scored, emotionally engaging, and mechanically sophisticated continuation of Toby Fox's unique vision, leaving fans desperate to uncover the deeper mysteries of the Dark World and the truth behind the seemingly tragic fate of its characters.
