Previous Versions
HIVESWAP: ACT 2 is the second installment in the adventure game series set in the universe of the popular webcomic Homestuck. Developed by What Pumpkin Games, it is a classic point-and-click adventure that continues the journey of human protagonist Joey Claire on the alien, dystopian planet of Alternia, picking up immediately where the first act left off.
The Journey on Alternia
Having been portal-swapped from her home on Earth with the troll boy Dammek, Joey is now stranded on Alternia, a world ruled by the terrifyingly complex and brutal Hemospectrum caste system. Act 2 follows Joey and her lowblood troll ally, Xefros Tritoh, as they flee the clutches of the tyrannical Heiress, Trizza.
Their primary goal is twofold:
To find a way to get Joey back to Earth. To locate Dammek’s influential rebel contact, Cridea Jeevik, who is planning a large social gathering that could ignite the rebellion.
The initial plan to meet Cridea at Jeevik Island is immediately complicated by an explosion at the train station, forcing Joey and Xefros to find an alternate route. They soon board an Alternian train, where the majority of the game takes place. The plot revolves around them navigating the train cars, which are stratified by blood caste (from the low-bloods at the back to the high-bloods at the front) and attempting to divert the train onto a faster track.
Character Encounters and Lore
The train journey serves as an ingenious vehicle for deep world-building. As Joey and Xefros move through the cars, they encounter numerous trolls introduced in the preceding Troll Call and Friendsim promotional material. These interactions are often the highlight, showcasing the bizarre, quirky, and sometimes genuinely sinister nature of Alternian culture. Notable encounters include:
-
The flamboyant purple-blood clown, Marvus Xoloto.
-
The philosophical, high-caste intellectual, Galekh Xigisi.
-
The appearance of several other "Troll Call" characters like Tegiri Kalbur and Daraya Jonjet.
These characters are essential to solving the puzzles, which involve typical point-and-click inventory management, dialogue puzzles, and, most notably, a mid-game sequence styled as a Phoenix Wright courtroom trial where Joey must defend an accused troll.
Escalating Stakes
Throughout the adventure, Joey receives a dire warning: she and Dammek have only 11 days to return to their respective home planets before both Earth and Alternia face destruction. This ticking clock raises the stakes considerably.
The Act culminates in a shocking sequence where the jovial facade of the high-bloods is peeled back, forcing Joey to face the brutal reality of the Hemospectrum’s cruelty. Despite successfully rerouting the train, the act ends on a cliffhanger when the train is utterly destroyed by a massive external blast, leaving the fate of Joey and Xefros uncertain and setting the stage for Act
