HUNTDOWN is a retro-inspired, run-and-gun action platformer developed by Easy Trigger Games and released in 2020. It serves as a love letter to the gritty, neon-drenched aesthetic and challenging side-scrolling gameplay of 1980s and 90s arcade classics like Contra, Metal Slug, and RoboCop. The game immerses players in a dystopian, crime-ridden future where violence is the only currency.

 Setting and Vibe

The game is set in a chaotic, cyberpunk metropolis where four major, absurdly stylized gangs control the streets. The world is a deliberate homage to B-movie action, featuring constant explosions, synthwave music, and over-the-top, cheesy dialogue.

Players take on the role of one of three equally cynical bounty hunters—Anna Conda, John Sawyer, or the robot Mow Man—each with their own unique passive ability (e.g., dodging, sliding, or enhanced health regeneration). Hired by the mysterious crime syndicate, HUNTDOWN is simple: kill all the gang leaders and collect the bounty.

 Intense Run-and-Gun Gameplay

HUNTDOWN's core mechanic is non-stop, intense action across four sprawling, distinct crime territories.

  • Cover System: A key feature distinguishing it from its predecessors is the ability to use a cover system. Players can duck behind objects to avoid the relentless onslaught of enemy fire, adding a strategic layer to the otherwise frantic combat.

  • Arsenal: The game boasts a vast and destructive arsenal. In addition to the hunter's unique primary weapon (pistol, machine gun, or katana), players pick up a rotating cast of special weapons, ranging from laser guns and grenade launchers to hockey sticks and even exploding boomerang hats.

  • Environmental Hazards: Levels are filled with destructible environments, exploding barrels, and unique traps that can be used to dispatch enemies creatively.

  • Boss Battles: Each of the 20 levels culminates in a spectacular and often hilarious boss fight against a memorable gang leader, such as the baseball bat-wielding No-Brainers or the cyber-samurai Misplaced priorities. These battles require pattern recognition and precise timing, adhering closely to the arcade tradition.

 Co-op and Presentation

The game fully supports local co-op, allowing two players to team up and double the chaos, which is arguably the best way to experience the challenging difficulty.

The presentation is stellar:

  • Pixel Art: The game uses highly detailed, fluidly animated 16-bit pixel art, giving the action a crisp, modern feel while maintaining the retro aesthetic.

  • Soundtrack: The pumping, synth-heavy soundtrack perfectly complements the neon-lit urban warzones.

HUNTDOWN succeeds by not just mimicking the games of the past, but by modernizing their core mechanics while perfectly capturing their spirit and humor. It is a satisfyingly difficult and stylish action romp.
