Pocket Bravery is an original 2D fighting game developed by Brazilian company Statera Studio and published by PQube. Released on PC in August 2023 and on consoles (PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch) in April 2025, the game serves as a vibrant homage to the golden age of arcade fighting games while integrating modern mechanics and a distinct visual style.

Neo Geo Pocket Aesthetic and Design

The most immediate and striking feature of Pocket Bravery is its visual presentation. The game channels the distinctive Neo Geo Pocket Color aesthetic, adopting a charming "chibi" or Super Deformed (SD) pixel art style for its characters. This choice evokes a strong sense of nostalgia for classic titles like The King of Fighters and Fatal Fury but presents them in a cute, pocket-sized format. Despite the reduced size, the character sprites are highly expressive, and the animations are fluid, ensuring the action remains sharp and readable.

The game's narrative follows protagonist Nuno Alves, a fighter seeking revenge against a criminal organization called "The Pack" and its leader, Hector, after a betrayal. The story unfolds as Nuno and other fighters across the world awaken to a mysterious phenomenon granting them elemental-based powers.

Classic Feel, Modern Mechanics

Pocket Bravery is designed to appeal to both seasoned fighting game veterans and newcomers. It uses a traditional four-button control system (light and heavy punch, light and heavy kick), reminiscent of classics from the 1990s.

However, the combat system introduces unique mechanics to add depth:

• Ichor/Element Meter: This is the game's unique resource gauge, filled by dealing and taking damage. The Ichor meter can be used to perform several strategic actions:

  • Element Strike: Enhances standard special moves for extra damage and utility.

  • Breaker: An aerial or ground counter move that pushes the opponent away, useful for escaping pressure and interrupting combos.

  • Final Move: The ultimate attack, a powerful cinematic super that is only accessible when the meter is full.

• Simplified Inputs: For newer players, the game offers an option for simplified move inputs, allowing special attacks to be performed with less complex command sequences, lowering the barrier to entry without sacrificing the strategic depth available to advanced players using traditional inputs.

• Rollback Netcode: Critical for a modern fighting game, Pocket Bravery features robust rollback netcode, ensuring smooth and responsive online competitive play.

The game features an array of single-player content, including a Story Mode (told through comic-style panels), Arcade Mode, a rigorous Survival Mode, and a comprehensive Training Mode complete with frame data and a Combo Trial system. Having been nominated for Best Fighting Game at The Game Awards 2023 and winning Brazilian Game of the Year at the Brasil Game Awards 2023, Pocket Bravery established itself as a well-regarded indie entry in the competitive fighting game landscape.
