Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones is the dramatic conclusion to the beloved Sands of Time trilogy, released in 2005. The game seamlessly blends the vibrant, storybook feel of The Sands of Time with the darker combat intensity introduced in Warrior Within, all while focusing on an emotionally gripping narrative about redemption and self-mastery.

The Story: A City and Soul Divided

The game begins immediately after the alternate ending of Warrior Within, with the Prince and his new companion, Kaileena (the Empress of Time), returning to Babylon. Instead of peace, they find the city ravaged by war. Their short-lived reprieve ends in tragedy when the villainous Vizier reappears, murders Kaileena with the Dagger of Time, and unleashes the Sands of Time once more, granting himself immortality and transforming his army into monstrous Sand Creatures.

The Prince, escaping the initial blast, is infected by the Sands, which gives rise to a malicious alter ego: the Dark Prince. This cynical, cruel voice constantly taunts the Prince, attempting to corrupt him and seize control. The core plot revolves around the Prince’s desperate, city-spanning quest to defeat the Vizier, save his kingdom, and wage an internal war against the Dark Prince before he is consumed entirely. Along the way, he reluctantly reunites with Farah, his companion from the original adventure, who is meeting him for the first time in this altered timeline.

Dual Gameplay and Mechanics

The conflict is reflected directly in the gameplay, which centers on two distinct character states:

  • The Prince: Retains his familiar acrobatic prowess, excelling at fluid parkour, wall-running, and environmental puzzle-solving. He wields the Dagger of Time and his father's sword in the expanded Free-Form Fighting system.

  • The Dark Prince: A monstrous, sand-corrupted version of the hero. In this form, the Prince is much more powerful in combat and wields the deadly Daggertail, a chain-like weapon that can be used for sweeping attacks and for swinging across large gaps in the environment. However, this power comes at a cost: the Dark Prince’s health constantly drains, forcing the player into a frantic rush to collect Sand to survive.

A major new mechanic is the Speed Kill system. The Prince can now sneak up on unsuspecting enemies and initiate a cinematic quick-time event (QTE) stealth attack, allowing players to dispatch foes quickly and efficiently, blending platforming and combat in a new way. Chariot Races also break up the platforming, adding intense, fast-paced action sequences to the game.

By balancing the two identities and leveraging their unique skills—the Prince's agility and the Dark Prince's sheer power—the player battles towards the final confrontation, a satisfying and definitive end to the trilogy's epic saga.
