The Classrooms

The Classrooms is an independent psychological horror game developed by Misfit Creations and released in 2024. Building on the current popularity of "Liminal Space" and "Backrooms" horror, the game traps players within an endless, bizarrely familiar, and deeply unsettling environment—an infinite, interconnected maze of derelict, abandoned classrooms and institutional hallways.

Liminal Terror and Infinite Space

The core concept of The Classrooms is the exploration of a sprawling, non-Euclidean school building that defies all logic. The environment is characterized by:

• Repetitive Architecture: Long, dimly lit corridors, identical rows of empty desks, peeling paint, and the constant, unnerving hum of fluorescent lights. This architectural repetition preys on the player's sense of direction and sanity.

• Psychological Pressure: The environment is engineered to be unsettling. Things shift slightly when the player isn't looking, noises echo from unseen sources, and the lack of external reference points induces a powerful sense of claustrophobia and agoraphobia simultaneously.

The game is played from a first-person perspective, enhancing the immersion and the vulnerability of the player as they navigate the confusing labyrinth. The horror is slow-burn and atmospheric, relying heavily on tension and jump scares that are often triggered by breaking a perceived "rule" of the environment.

Gameplay: Escape and Observation

The gameplay loop is centered on survival, resource management, and subtle puzzle-solving:

• Resource Management: Players must manage basic resources, primarily light sources (like flashlights) and sanity. The environment constantly chips away at the protagonist's mental state, and allowing sanity to drop too low can lead to more aggressive entities appearing or severe visual and auditory hallucinations.

• Subtle Puzzle Mechanics: Progression is not always straightforward. Players must pay close attention to environmental clues, solve simple observation puzzles, and figure out the bizarre, internal "logic" of the school's layout to unlock new areas or find crucial items.

• Evasion and Stealth: The Classrooms is not combat-focused. Players are almost entirely defenseless against the anomalous entities that roam the halls. Survival depends on effective use of stealth, hiding under desks or in lockers, and knowing when to run to the next safe zone.

The Lore of the Institution

While the environment feels endless, the game features a narrative layer told through fragmented documents, notes, and audio logs scattered throughout the map. These pieces hint at the nature of the institution—possibly a corrupted memory, a failed governmental experiment, or an inter-dimensional pocket where reality has broken down. Piecing together this ambiguous lore is a significant motivator for deep exploration.

The Classrooms delivers a classic modern horror experience, capitalizing on the dread of familiarity and the terror of being lost in a space that should be safe but is, instead, eternally menacing.
