Previous Versions
Rack and Slay is a truly unique and innovative indie roguelite that successfully merges the strategic positioning of Billiards or Pool with the monster-slaying progression of a dungeon crawler. Developed by the solo developer minigoblin, the game throws a small, billiard-ball-like hero into a grid-based dungeon filled with monsters, traps, and power-ups.
The central mechanic, the Slaying Shot, is what defines the game. Instead of simply moving, the player's turn involves lining up a shot to hit the hero ball into a target, similar to striking a cue ball in pool.
The Slaying Shot Mechanic
Every turn, the player must use their shot to accomplish several simultaneous goals:
-
Attack Monsters: Hitting an enemy with the hero ball deals damage. The shot’s power, angle, and the resulting chain reaction determine its effectiveness.
-
Chain Combos: The core of the strategy lies in chaining the shots. A successful combo involves hitting the hero ball into one monster, which then ricochets or rolls into a second, and so on. Chaining hits across multiple enemies and objects not only clears the room but also builds the Combo Meter, which grants bonus damage and temporary effects.
-
Positioning: Just like in pool, the shot's aftermath is critical. After the last hit, the hero ball comes to a stop, leaving it exposed until the next turn. Smart players must calculate the angle and force to land the hero ball in a safe zone, often behind an obstacle or far from a powerful enemy's attack range.
This billiard mechanic transforms combat into a complex, satisfying puzzle where pure brute force is rarely the solution; instead, the player must plan several moves ahead, using environmental hazards and other balls to their advantage.
Progression and Customization
As a roguelite, Rack and Slay features deep run-to-run progression:
-
Loot: After clearing a room, the player collects gold and rewards, including unique Equipment (like powerful new cue tips) and Ability Cards.
-
Deckbuilding Lite: Ability Cards are used to augment the hero ball's shots, granting temporary buffs like increased damage, extra bounces, or defensive shields. Collecting synergistic cards is key to surviving deeper levels.
-
The Pool Hall Hub: Between runs, players return to a customizable Pool Hall hub, where they can spend collected resources to unlock permanent upgrades, cosmetic options, and new starting equipment for the next attempt.
Rack and Slay is a highly innovative indie gem that successfully grounds its fantasy dungeon crawler elements in the tactile, satisfying physics of a familiar bar game.
