His hunt for Bill Williamson begins in the rugged plains of New Austin, leading to a near-fatal encounter at Fort Mercer. This pursuit then drags him across the border to Mexico, where he becomes entangled in a burgeoning civil war between a tyrannical governor and a band of rebels. John works both sides to track down Bill and Javier, ultimately delivering them to the federal agents.

His final target is the charismatic, but increasingly unhinged, Dutch van der Linde, his former leader. This pursuit brings John to the rapidly modernizing territory of West Elizabeth, where he eventually corners Dutch. Facing obsolescence and the end of his way of life, Dutch delivers a final, cryptic warning about the government's true intentions before taking his own life.

Redemption and Betrayal
Having completed his mission, John is finally reunited with his family at his small ranch, Beecher's Hope. For a brief period, he experiences the redemption he fought for, attempting to teach his son how to live an honest life. However, Dutch's ominous warning proves true. The Bureau of Investigation, viewing John as a loose end and another relic of the past, reneges on their deal. Agent Ross leads a full-scale military assault on the ranch.

In a heartbreaking act of self-sacrifice, John ensures the escape of Abigail and Jack, before facing the army in his barn. He is tragically gunned down, finally achieving a different kind of "redemption" in death by securing his family's freedom.

The Epilogue: A Cycle of Violence
The game concludes three years later, with players controlling Jack Marston, John's now-adult son. After burying his mother next to his father and Uncle, Jack finds and challenges the retired Agent Ross to a duel, killing him and fulfilling the cycle of violence the game’s narrative struggled to break. The story is a somber reflection on the end of an era, where loyalty and honor clash with an unstoppable march toward a modern, and often unforgiving, world.
