Residual is a unique 2D survival platformer from indie developer OrangePixel, placing a heavy emphasis on exploration, crafting, and procedural generation over traditional combat. The game begins with a solitary explorer crash-landing on a strange, uninhabited planet after their ship, the PeeBee, malfunctions. Stranded and accompanied only by PDB, a snarky yet helpful Personal Disaster Bot, the player’s goal is simple: survive the harsh environment and unearth the ancient secrets needed to repair the ship and escape.
Survival through Science
The core of Residual lies in its robust survival mechanics and OrangePixel’s proprietary Nature Engine. This engine procedurally generates thousands of distinct planets, with environmental factors like proximity to the sun, cosmic storms, and temperature directly impacting gameplay. On a hot, sunny planet, the player must seek shade and manage suit energy, while a planet further out means longer, colder nights and reliance on campfires and internal power.
The survival loop involves constantly monitoring the character’s stamina and suit power. Stamina is depleted by physical actions and restored through foraging food and sleeping. Suit power, which runs crucial functions like scanning and crafting, is recharged via solar energy during the day. This creates a challenging rhythm of exploration and rest, often interrupted by the incessant, though sometimes amusing, demands of PDB.
Exploration and Ancient Secrets
While there is no conventional combat, the planet is not entirely safe. Hostile plant life, strange ooze, and environmental hazards pose constant threats that must be navigated using smart platforming and problem-solving. Exploration is key, and it’s layered with light puzzles—such as pushing blocks or supplying power to ancient alien devices—to open up new sections of the world.
Deeper underground, the player discovers remnants of a long-lost civilization and must collect datacubes and technology scraps. These "residual" artifacts are the key to unlocking new crafting recipes at the ship's replicator, enabling the creation of advanced tools like teleporters, mining drills, and eventually, the parts required to fix the PeeBee and leave the planet.
A Charming, Challenging Indie Gem
Visually, Residual boasts charming, detailed pixel art that evokes classic 2D platformers. Its emphasis on a non-violent, resource-management approach to survival makes it a compelling choice for players who enjoy exploration and crafting without the stress of constant monster battles. While some players find the controls finicky or the hunger/sleep demands too frequent, the sheer variety offered by its thousands of procedurally generated worlds ensures that every playthrough offers a unique, often daunting, but ultimately rewarding survival adventure.
