The term "Root" most commonly refers to the acclaimed asymmetric strategy board game designed by Cole Wehrle and published by Leder Games. While it appears whimsical with its charming woodland creatures and cutesy artwork, it is a deeply complex, competitive conflict game that cleverly models different styles of political and military power.

Root: A Game of Woodland Might and Right

The game is set in a fictional woodland where various animal factions vie for control after a centralized bird government collapsed. Players compete to be the first to score 30 Victory Points or achieve a Dominance Card objective.

Asymmetric Factions and Unique Gameplay

The defining feature of Root is its extreme asymmetry. Each of the four factions in the base game operates under a fundamentally different set of rules, scoring methods, and strategic objectives, essentially making the players feel like they are playing different games on the same board:

• The Marquise de Cat: The initial occupying force, they play like a traditional wargame faction focused on engine building and logistics. They score points primarily by building workshops, sawmills, and barracks, and must defend their infrastructure across the map.

• The Eyrie Dynasties: The exiled bird nobility attempting to reclaim their ancient birthright. They score by building Roosts and following a strict, self-imposed set of actions called the Decree. If they fail to execute the Decree, they suffer Turmoil, losing points and resetting their leadership.

• The Woodland Alliance: The hidden, insurgent peasant movement. They start small, gaining support cards to place Sympathy tokens, which score points and outrage their opponents. They score heavily when they successfully stage a Revolt, replacing enemy pieces with their own bases.

• The Vagabond: A lone raccoon or creature who acts as a mercenary and rogue element. They do not directly control territory but score points by completing Quests and managing their Relationship status (friendly or hostile) with the other factions. They are often seen as the kingmaker, selling their services to those who need help.

Modeling Political Theory

Beyond the cute aesthetic, Root is praised for abstractly modeling real-world political theory and conflict dynamics:

• The Marquise de Cat represents a heavy-handed occupying industrial power, focused on resource extraction and policing.

• The Eyrie Dynasties are a rigid, authoritarian regime prone to internal collapse if their planning is flawed (Turmoil).

• The Woodland Alliance models an insurgency or guerrilla movement, slowly gaining popular support before unleashing a sudden, powerful strike.

• The Vagabond embodies the power of the non-state actor or foreign agent, whose influence is tied to wealth and relationships rather than territory.

This complex interplay forces players to constantly read the table, anticipate the unique power swings of their opponents, and engage in social negotiation and occasional temporary alliances to prevent any single faction from achieving dominance too quickly.

Root is therefore not just a war game, but a political puzzle where success relies on understanding the fundamentally different ways each faction can achieve power.
