Plot and Core Gameplay Loop

The game’s darkly humorous premise sets the stage: you play as the tyrannical Black King, whose wicked ways have caused all his loyal subjects—the Queen, Rooks, Knights, and Bishops—to defect to the White King's army. Left alone on the board with nothing but his royal shotgun and wounded pride, the Black King must seek revenge against the overwhelming White forces.

The goal of each "floor" (level) is straightforward: eliminate the enemy White King.

1. King's Moves: The Black King still follows the traditional chess rule of moving only one square in any direction.

2. The Shotgun: The King also has the option to shoot his shotgun. Firing uses one turn and one shell (typically starting with two). The shotgun deals damage, which is greater at closer ranges, and has a spread that can hit multiple enemy pieces.

3. Reload: Since shooting takes a turn and uses up ammo, the King must move to a new square to automatically reload one shell, or spend a turn to reload manually. This forces the player into a crucial tactical rhythm of move, shoot, and reposition.

4. Enemy Pieces: All White pieces—Pawns, Knights, Rooks, etc.—move according to their standard chess rules, but they often have different speed ratings, meaning they move on specific turns. They also have health bars, requiring multiple shots to take down.

The Roguelike Progression (The Double-Edged Sword)

The roguelike element is introduced after clearing each floor in the main Throne Mode. The player must choose between two randomized pairs of cards to carry onto the next level:

• Black Card (Buff): A permanent, positive upgrade for the King. Examples include increasing the shotgun's damage, widening the pellet spread, increasing maximum ammo capacity, or giving the King a temporary movement ability from a defeated enemy's soul.

• White Card (Curse): A permanent, negative modifier that boosts the enemy side. Examples include adding extra Pawns, giving the enemy Queen more health, promoting enemy Pawns that reach the back row to Queens, or allowing Rooks to move more often.

This unique progression system forces a difficult, strategic trade-off. Every beneficial upgrade the player receives is paired with an increased challenge for the opponent, ensuring that the difficulty constantly scales and that no two runs are the same.

With its simple but deep design, short run times (around 20 minutes), and high difficulty ranks, Shotgun King is a highly addictive puzzle-tactics game praised for its clever blend of genres.
