Previous Versions
SpeedRunners is a fiercely competitive, multiplayer side-scrolling platform game developed by DoubleDutch Games and published by tinyBuild. It combines the precise movement of classic platformers with the aggressive item usage of kart racers, resulting in a unique and highly addictive competitive experience often described as a "competitive multiplayer Mario" by critics.
The Race to Stay On Screen
The core mechanic of SpeedRunners is the dynamic screen. Players race across a 2D environment, but the camera focuses only on the leader. The objective is not just to be fast, but to maintain a leading position long enough to force opponents off-screen, which results in their immediate elimination for that round. Once a player is eliminated, the screen begins to shrink until only one player remains to win the round.
This mechanic creates intense, high-stakes combat where a small lead or a perfectly timed attack can instantly decide the winner. A full match typically requires a player to win three or four rounds.
Movement and Mastery
Mastering SpeedRunners relies on a fluid combination of parkour mechanics that must be used strategically to build and maintain momentum:
-
Running and Jumping: The foundation of movement, used for navigating the terrain. Maintaining speed is crucial; hitting an obstruction like a box can cause a critical loss of momentum.
-
Grappling Hook: This is the most vital movement tool. Players can use the grappling hook to swing from designated white ceilings and surfaces. Swinging is often much faster than running and allows for sharp turns, sudden ascents, and maintaining momentum across large gaps. Proper grappling technique separates casual players from experts.
-
Sliding: Used to pass through narrow spaces, sliding can also be used offensively. Sliding into an opponent will trip them, drastically slowing their momentum and potentially pushing them toward the edge of the screen.
-
Wall Jumping/Climbing: Allows players to quickly ascend vertical shafts by alternating jumps between two parallel walls.
Weapons and Sabotage
Adding a layer of chaos to the platforming are numerous power-ups scattered across the map, essential for maintaining the lead or recovering from behind. These items are designed for sabotage and disruption:
-
Rockets: Fire a forward-moving projectile, useful for knocking opponents off-screen or into traps.
-
Golden Hook: A powerful grappling hook that targets an opponent, often pulling them backward into danger.
-
Mines: Dropped behind the player, mines explode when touched, stunning opponents.
The blend of refined movement and aggressive item use ensures that while skill is paramount, a well-placed rocket can always give a trailing player a shot at victory, making the game exhilaratingly unpredictable.
