Suzerain is a text-based, political role-playing game and visual novel developed by Torpor Games and released in 2020. Set in the fictional, mid-20th-century nation of Sordland, the game casts the player as Anton Rayne, who unexpectedly rises to become the fourth president of the Republic. The core of the gameplay is a relentless series of narrative choices and policy decisions that shape Sordland's future over a four-year term. Unlike traditional RPGs, the challenges are political and economic rather than physical. Key decisions include:

• Constitutional Reform: The player must decide whether to centralize power, weaken the President, reform the judiciary, or scrap the constitution entirely, balancing the demands of the conservative wing, the reformists, and the Supreme Court.

• Economic Policy: Rayne must choose between market liberalization (privatization and foreign investment) or a planned economy (nationalization and centralized state control), affecting the lives of Sordland's citizens and its budget.

• Foreign Policy: The nation is caught between two emerging Cold War superpowers: the democratic, capitalist superpower United Contana and the socialist giant Contana. Rayne must choose allies, join military pacts, and navigate crises without triggering an international conflict.

The Power of Consequences

Suzerain is renowned for its intricate web of consequences. No decision exists in a vacuum:

• Approval Rating: Choices affect the approval of different factions (the Oligarchs, the Military, the Bludish minority, the Youth, and the Assembly). A low approval rating, especially among the Military, can lead to a coup or impeachment.

• Political Capital: The player manages a limited resource called "Political Capital," which must be spent wisely to push legislation through the polarized Grand Assembly and influence key figures.

• Budget Management: The national budget is always tight. Funding a major infrastructure project may necessitate cutting education or healthcare, which can lead to civil unrest or an economic collapse.

The game is devoid of easy answers, forcing the player to embrace morally ambiguous compromise. Rayne’s personal life, including his relationship with his family, is also intertwined with his political career, adding a layer of human drama to the high-stakes political thriller.
