Tannenberg is a squad-based, multiplayer first-person shooter that vividly and authentically recreates the dramatic and expansive battles of the Eastern Front of World War I. As the second standalone title in the WW1 Game Series, following Verdun, it shifts the focus away from the stagnant trench warfare of the Western Front. It emphasizes the vast, tactical maneuvering that defined the conflict between the Russian Empire and the Central Powers.
The game is heavily inspired by the historical Battle of Tannenberg in 1914, and this influence translates directly into its core gameplay mode: Maneuver. This 40-to-64 player mode (depending on the platform) takes place on sprawling, open maps, offering a dynamic and challenging experience that captures the essence of mobile warfare. Teams fight to capture and hold key strategic sectors, each of which grants the controlling side a distinct tactical advantage, such as faster victory point gain or the ability for Non-Commissioned Officers (NCOs) to call in artillery and reconnaissance strikes.
Authentic and Tactical Gameplay
Tannenberg is committed to historical accuracy. Every element, from the uniforms of the Russian Frontoviks, Latvian Riflemen, and Austro-Hungarian K.u.K. troops to the over 50 available weapons, has been meticulously researched and modeled. The combat is deliberately slow and lethal, starkly contrasting with fast-paced modern shooters. Rifle shots are often one-hit kills, emphasizing marksmanship, positional awareness, and the terrifying brutality of early 20th-century warfare.
Squad-based mechanics are central to survival. Players are organized into four-man squads, each featuring historically accurate roles—like the officer, rifleman, and support—with unique loadouts and abilities. Effective communication and teamwork are essential, as the easiest way to redeploy and maintain momentum is by spawning on a friendly squad member.
Vast, Diverse Battlefields
The nine large, open maps in Tannenberg are modeled after real battlefields across the Eastern Front, including the frozen lakes, thick forests of Galicia, and desolate Polish villages. These varied environments provide ample space for flanking maneuvers, unlike the linear trench lines of its predecessor. The game also features Attrition Warfare, a team deathmatch variant focused on depleting the enemy's manpower tickets, and Rifle Deathmatch, a free-for-all mode that tests pure marksmanship with bolt-action rifles.
Tannenberg delivers a grim, immersive, and tactical depiction of the Great War, successfully blending historical authenticity with challenging multiplayer strategy.
