Total War: WARHAMMER II is the second installment in the critically acclaimed fantasy strategy trilogy developed by Creative Assembly. It successfully blends the signature turn-based empire management of the Total War series with the sprawling, high-fantasy universe of Games Workshop's Warhammer Fantasy Battles. Set on a new, massive map encompassing the continents of Ulthuan, Naggaroth, Lustria, and the Southlands, the game introduced four distinct new core races, each with unique campaign mechanics, unit rosters, and objectives.

The Eye of the Vortex Campaign

The game’s main single-player experience is the Eye of the Vortex campaign, a narrative-driven race for control over the Great Vortex—a colossal magical maelstrom centered on the High Elven island continent of Ulthuan. This Vortex was created millennia ago to siphon the excess Winds of Magic and stave off an ancient Chaos invasion, but it is now faltering.

  • The Race: Players must guide their chosen faction through a series of increasingly expensive and powerful Rituals. Completing the five rituals first triggers a final, climactic battle on the Isle of the Dead to determine the fate of the Vortex and, consequently, the world.

  • Intervention: Rival factions will actively work to stop the player, not only by declaring war but also by spending resources to hire powerful "Intervention Armies" to spawn directly near the player's ritual sites.

  • Diverse Objectives: While the High Elves and Lizardmen seek to stabilize the Vortex, the Skaven and Dark Elves seek to seize its power for their own dark purposes. Post-launch DLC races, like the Tomb Kings, offer completely unique objectives, such as searching for the Books of Nagash, entirely outside the Vortex contest.

The New Races and Playstyles

The base game introduced four core races, each playing dramatically different from the last:

  • High Elves: Highly defensive with potent archers and powerful diplomacy, utilizing the Intrigue system to manipulate world events for profit and alliances.

  • Dark Elves: Aggressive raiders and slavers who fuel their economy with the Slavery mechanic and utilize powerful Black Arks as mobile fortresses and recruitment centers at sea.

  • Lizardmen: Ancient, cold-blooded warriors who field disciplined infantry (Saurus) and monstrous dinosaurs (Stegadons, Carnosaurs). They rely on the Geomantic Web to amplify their magical rituals and regional bonuses.

  • Skaven: Sneaky, swarm-like rat-men who use powerful ranged weaponry ("weapon teams") and artillery. They employ an underground movement system (Underway) and a unique food mechanic that impacts public order and army replenishment.

Mortal Empires

A major feature for players who own both Total War: WARHAMMER and Total War: WARHAMMER II is the Mortal Empires campaign. This free, massive combined map merges the continents of both games, creating a colossal sandbox experience where all owned races from both titles can be played on one unified world, offering hundreds of hours of conquest and monumental replayability.
