Touhou: Lost Branch of Legend is a roguelike deckbuilder developed by Alioth Studio, set in the vibrant world of the Touhou Project universe. Released into Early Access in August 2022, the game successfully adapts the core Touhou experience—intense "danmaku" (bullet hell) patterns—into a deep, turn-based card combat system reminiscent of Slay the Spire, while introducing complex, Magic: The Gathering-inspired mechanics.

The Incident: Chasing the Lunar Treasure

The game’s story begins with an incident at the Lunar Capital Exhibition in Eientei: the powerful divine treasure, "The Jeweled Branch of Hourai," has been stolen. As is tradition in Gensokyo, the incident must be resolved, and players take control of one of the iconic Touhou heroines, such as Reimu Hakurei or Marisa Kirisame, to chase the culprit, recover the treasure, and face off against the powerful girls of Gensokyo.

Innovative Colored Mana System

The biggest deviation and most praised feature of Lost Branch of Legend is its Colored Mana System. Unlike the simple one-resource energy of most deckbuilders, cards require specific colored energy (Red, White, Blue, Black, Green) to be played, adding a profound layer of strategic depth:

• Mana Acquisition: Characters start with a limited pool of two colors. Throughout a run, players can acquire Shining Exhibits (relics) that permanently add new, different-colored Mana to their pool.

• Deck Synergy: This system drives deck building. Obtaining a new color doesn't just grant one more energy; it unlocks entirely new pools of character-unique cards and neutral cards tied to that color, fundamentally altering the available build paths and scaling potential of the run. For instance, Reimu typically focuses on Red and White (Strength/Damage and Defense/Barrier), but obtaining Blue Mana opens up new avenues for card draw and extra turns.

Danmaku and Graze Combat

Combat translates the spectacular bullet-hell aesthetic into turn-based defense. Enemies, particularly the bosses, unleash classic Touhou Danmaku patterns that must be mitigated. Players don't just use standard block; they utilize the Barrier and Graze mechanics:

• Barrier: Functions like traditional block, absorbing incoming damage.

• Graze: A powerful resource that allows the player to take zero damage from a single hit. Graze stacks are consumed with each attack blocked and also decay at the start of the player's turn, forcing players to find a balance between proactive damage prevention and reactive defense.
