Trappist

TRAPPIST is an acronym for the TRAnsiting Planets and PlanetesImals Small Telescope—a collaboration between Belgian and Swiss astronomers that operates two robotic telescopes: TRAPPIST-South in Chile and TRAPPIST-North in Morocco. The project, whose name is a playful nod to famous Belgian Trappist beer, is dedicated to the study of comets and, most famously, the search for exoplanets orbiting ultra-cool dwarf stars.

The TRAPPIST-1 System

The most significant and celebrated discovery made by the TRAPPIST telescopes is the TRAPPIST-1 planetary system, located approximately 40 light-years away in the constellation Aquarius. This system is extraordinary because it is the largest known system of Earth-sized planets orbiting a single star.

  • The Star: TRAPPIST-1 is an ultra-cool red dwarf star—a star far smaller, dimmer, and cooler than our Sun, being only slightly larger than Jupiter. While it is long-lived, it is prone to powerful stellar flares, which are a major factor in assessing the habitability of its planets.

  • The Planets: The system contains seven known planets (designated TRAPPIST-1b through TRAPPIST-1h). All of them are close to Earth's size and orbit their star at incredibly close distances, all fitting well within the orbit of Mercury in our own Solar System. A "year" on the innermost planet (TRAPPIST-1b) is only about 1.5 Earth days long.

The Habitable Zone

The tight orbits of the planets around the small, dim TRAPPIST-1 star mean that the Habitable Zone (the region where liquid water could potentially exist on a planet's surface) is also extremely close to the star.

  • Three planetsTRAPPIST-1e, f, and g—are thought to orbit within this habitable zone.

  • Despite their promising locations, all seven planets are likely tidally locked, meaning one side perpetually faces the star (eternal day) while the other remains in permanent shadow (eternal night). This configuration would create complex and extreme climate conditions.

Current Research and Future Outlook

The TRAPPIST-1 system has become a primary target for follow-up observations by powerful instruments like the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). By observing the light of the star as the planets transit (pass in front of) it, astronomers can analyze the light that filters through the planetary atmospheres. This process, called transmission spectroscopy, is crucial for determining the chemical composition of the atmospheres and, ultimately, judging their potential for sustaining life.

Initial JWST observations are already revealing vital clues about the atmospheric status of these worlds, making the TRAPPIST-1 system a focal point in the search for life beyond our solar system.
