UnderMine is a fantastic 2D action-adventure rogue-lite developed and published by Thorium in 2020. The game successfully blends the punishing, run-based structure of a rogue-lite with the engaging combat and exploration of a classic top-down action RPG, all wrapped in a charming pixel-art style and a quirky, humorous narrative.

The Peasant's Plight and Permanent Progress

The player takes on the role of a series of disposable Peasants sent down into the eponymous UnderMine, a vast, procedurally generated network of tunnels beneath a fantasy kingdom. The mission is to rescue the missing Archmage, Arkanos, and uncover the source of mysterious earthquakes.

The core loop involves: Mining (using a pickaxe to smash rocks and gather gold), Fighting (using the pickaxe for melee or throwing it like a boomerang), and Dying. Upon perishing, the peasant is replaced by a new one, but not all progress is lost.

Gold is the central mechanic. Only a fraction of the gold collected is recovered upon death by a faithful crow, the Gold-Seamstress. This recovered gold is spent at the Forge on the surface to purchase permanent upgrades that improve core stats like health, attack power, and gold recovery rate. This system ensures that even failed runs contribute to the overall power growth, rewarding risk-taking while mitigating frustration.

 Familiars, Relics, and God Runs

Temporary, run-specific power is gained through an enormous variety of random loot drops:

• Relics and Blessings: These passive and active items provide powerful, run-specific bonuses, ranging from elemental damage buffs to automated defenses.

• Synergy: The core joy of the gameplay is discovering how different items interact, creating potent, often "God Run"-level combinations (e.g., relics that grant fire damage paired with the Firebird familiar that boosts fire damage further).

 The Peasant's Familiar

The peasant is always accompanied by a Familiar, a companion creature that follows them everywhere and provides unique, run-based support. The initial familiar is the Canary, which aids in collecting gold. As the player progresses and unlocks new Familiars—such as the elemental Firebird and Thunderbird, the utility-focused Djinn, or the powerful Spirit—they gain temporary buffs to their abilities as the Familiar levels up during that specific run. Familiars have different requirements to gain experience (e.g., the Canary levels up by collecting gold), ensuring they always synergize with the current play style.

 Confronting the Bosses

Each biome of the UnderMine is guarded by a deadly boss that tests the peasant's build and skill. These include elemental and mechanical horrors like:

• Selt, Queen of Sand (a giant, worm-like creature in the Goldmine).

• Mortar, Charged Golem (a massive, stone automaton in Delvemore Dungeon).

• Noori, Spectre of Darkness (a shadow entity in the Halls of Din).

Defeating these bosses is essential for deeper progression and unlocking the true mysteries of the mine. UnderMine is an addictive experience that perfectly balances satisfying combat with meaningful, persistent progression.
