Windblown

Windblown is an upcoming action roguelite developed by Motion Twin, the creators of the highly successful Dead Cells. Currently in Early Access (launched October 24, 2024), the game takes the studio's signature fast-paced, fluid combat and elevates it with a new 3D isometric perspective, a vibrant, cartoon-inspired world, and a major focus on cooperative multiplayer.

Set in a world of floating islands orbiting a deadly storm known as the Vortex, players take on the role of Leapers—anthropomorphic animal warriors who live in the tranquil village of The Ark. Their peaceful home is threatened by the growing Vortex and its relentless robotic minions, the Sentinels. As a Leaper, the player must dive into the Vortex to absorb the memories and master the weapons of fallen heroes to fight back.

Lightning-Fast Movement and Combat

The defining feature of Windblown is its emphasis on speed and mobility, pushing the "action" element of the roguelite genre to its limit:

• Infinite Dash: Unlike many games with a limited dodge, Leapers can dash rapidly and continuously without a cooldown. This is essential for traversal, avoiding massive boss attacks, and keeping the pace of combat frenetic. The movement system is designed to create a sense of flow and mastery as players zip across the procedurally generated, multi-level floating islands.

• Dual-Weapon System: Players equip up to two distinct weapons (such as katanas, shields, or throwable kunais). Swapping between these weapons is seamless and vital, as the game introduces Alterattacks—powerful, synergistic finishing moves unlocked by combining strikes from the two different weapons. This system encourages dynamic combat and constant mixing of playstyles.

• Build Synergies: As in Dead Cells, each run is an opportunity for unique build creation. Players collect Gifts (temporary buffs) and Trinkets which can be stacked and combined to create unique and often chaotic synergies, tailoring the Leaper's abilities to their preferred style.

Co-op Focus and Metaprogression

A significant departure from the single-player Dead Cells is the introduction of online co-op for up to three players.

• Teamwork: The co-op mode is designed to reward synchronized play, allowing teammates to combine their builds and execute spectacular, coordinated attacks on the Sentinels and gigantic bosses.

• Death is a Lesson: True to the roguelite genre, death sends the Leaper back to The Ark. While temporary gear is lost, valuable materials and memories are retained. These resources are used at The Ark to unlock powerful new weapons, Gifts, and permanent upgrades, ensuring that every failed run still contributes to future success.

With its vibrant animation style and intense, highly skill-based gameplay, Windblown is positioned as a major evolution of the action roguelite formula.
