Dustborn is a single-player, story-driven action-adventure game developed by Red Thread Games and set in a striking, comic-book-inspired alternate history of North America in 2030. The game focuses on Pax, an exile and con-artist with a unique power: the ability to weaponize language. She can literally use words, or "Vocals," to influence, manipulate, and fight others.

The premise revolves around a perilous road trip across a fractured continent. Following an event known as the Broadcast, a segment of the population developed the ability to wield Protolanguage, giving them powers known as Vox—and turning them into persecuted outcasts known as Anomals. Pax and her crew—a diverse band of fellow Anomals and misfits—must pose as a touring punk rock band to serve as a cover for their true mission: to deliver a critical, stolen data package from the corporatocratic nation of Pacifica to a resistance movement in Nova Scotia, all while evading the militarized police state known as Justice.

Combat and Conversational Power

The core gameplay is a blend of narrative decision-making and light action combat.

  • Vox Powers: Pax's primary tool is her voice. In combat, she uses "Shouts" to disrupt and defeat enemies, such as using a Vocal to stun or "cancel" an opponent before finishing them with her baseball bat. Outside of combat, Vox is used in conversations to influence allies, extract information, or talk her way out of trouble with authorities, showcasing the power of language as a form of social control and weaponization.

  • Action: Combat is focused on melee and environmental interaction. While primarily a hack-and-slash experience with weapons like a baseball bat (which can be upgraded), the action is mixed with unique set pieces, such as throwing Molotov cocktails at bikers. The combat difficulty is adjustable, including a "no combat" option for players focused solely on the story.

Road Trip and Relationship Management

The road trip structure is key to the game's narrative. The crew travels across iconic, dystopian American locations, stopping for "gigs" which are handled via rhythm minigames that maintain their band cover.

Throughout the journey, player choice heavily impacts the relationships within the crew. Dialogue choices can be harsh, empathetic, or noncommittal, and the game uses a visible system to show how these choices affect Pax's standing and relationship with her companions. At the end of each chapter, the story is chronicled in a comic-book style summary that reflects the player's choices, emphasizing the game's focus on character development and the emotional baggage carried by this rebellious, found family of outcasts.
