Frostpunk 2

Frostpunk 2 is a city-building and society survival game developed and published by 11 bit studios. Set 30 years after the apocalyptic Great Storm of the original, the sequel shifts the focus from the desperate, immediate threat of the cold to the complex challenge of social survival and political division within the growing metropolis of New London.

Setting the Stage: Oil and Expansion

The year is 1946. The original leader, "The Captain," has died, and the city is now overseen by the new leader, "The Steward." Humanity has survived the immediate crisis, but New London is overcrowded, and the primary resource that saved them—coal—is running out.

The city's new hope, and central conflict, is the discovery of oil as a more powerful, albeit politically contentious, fuel source. The struggle is no longer just against the extreme cold; it's a battle over the future direction of the city, driven by the shift from a unified focus on survival to a division based on ideology and resources.

Social Survival: The Faction System

The core difference from the first game is the introduction of a deep faction and council system. Players are no longer absolute dictators; instead, they act as mediators between competing communities, each with its own vision for New London:

• Competing Ideologies: Factions like the technology-focused Machinists clash with more conservative groups who prioritize tradition or human labor.

• The Council Hall: Laws are passed through a democratic vote in the Council Hall. The Steward must negotiate with faction leaders, often by making promises or conceding to their demands, to secure the votes needed to enact new policies.

• Tension and Trust: The city's state is measured by Trust and Tension. Mismanaging the delicate balance, failing to keep promises, or favoring one faction too heavily can cause the populace to revolt, leading to anarchy, civil war, or the player's exile.

Macro City-Building

The scale of the city has increased dramatically, shifting the city-building mechanics from micro-management to macro-management:

• District Management: Instead of placing individual buildings, players now designate and develop large, multi-tile Districts (e.g., Housing, Food Production, Resource Extraction). Specific buildings can then be placed within these districts to unlock functions.

• Oil Industry: The player must strategically establish an oil industry and build supply lines that extend beyond New London into the surrounding Frostlands, where satellite colonies and outposts must be managed to ensure a steady supply of oil, food, and other resources.

• Cores: Cores (formerly Steam Cores) remain a vital, non-manufacturable resource that must be found through Frostland exploration and are required for advanced technology and Generator upgrades.

Frostpunk 2 elevates the challenge from simply keeping the heat on to navigating the tumultuous waters of human politics, proving that in the post-apocalypse, human nature is the ultimate, most difficult adversary.
