KeeperRL is a deeply immersive, low-fi, fantasy simulation game developed by the solo Polish programmer Michał Brzozowski (AKA "Keeper"). Released in its final 1.0 version in 2024 after a long and successful Early Access period, the game fuses the meticulous management depth of titles like Dwarf Fortress and Dungeon Keeper with the unpredictable, run-based structure of a roguelike. The core premise is simple: play as an evil wizard or overlord and build the most powerful, sprawling dungeon to withstand the inevitable heroes.

The Two Sides of the Coin

The gameplay of KeeperRL is divided into two distinct, yet interconnected, modes that offer contrasting challenges:

1. Dungeon Management (The Keeper): The main mode involves strategic building and resource management. Players begin as a lonely "Keeper" with a handful of goblin minions and must quickly start digging, building, and expanding their subterranean fortress.

   • Resource and Minion Management: Resources (wood, stone, iron) are gathered to construct workshops, barracks, training grounds, and trap corridors. Players must recruit, arm, and train various fantasy creatures—from goblins and orcs to harpies and dark knights—each with unique abilities and needs.

   • Defense and Research: The focus is on preparing for the enemy. Players research magic, upgrade armor, lay complex traps, and design the dungeon layout to funnel invading heroes into deadly kill zones.

   • Roguelike Destruction: Once the Keeper dies or the heart of the dungeon is destroyed, the run ends. Players must restart, but they retain certain permanent unlocks, adding a meta-progression layer.

2. Adventure Mode (The Raid): At any point, the Keeper can grab a small, elite squad of their most powerful minions and embark on a roguelike raid onto the surface. This shifts the view to a traditional top-down, turn-based roguelike adventure.

   • Loot and Conquest: The goal is to defeat rival factions, plunder settlements for rare resources, and find powerful artifacts to bring back to the dungeon.

   • Player Control: In this mode, the player directly controls the party, moving them tile-by-tile and issuing specific combat commands, making the success of the expedition a direct result of tactical skill.

Visual Style and Complexity

KeeperRL is characterized by its charming, retro ASCII/tile-based graphics—a style directly inspired by classic roguelikes like Nethack and Angband. Despite the simple look, the simulation running beneath is highly detailed, featuring complex physics, chemistry, and ecology. Fires spread, structures collapse, and minions suffer from morale issues and injuries.

The game boasts high replayability through a wide variety of unlockable starting scenarios, each featuring a different evil faction with unique starting units and research paths. This blend of sandbox creation and challenging roguelike exploration makes KeeperRL a unique and demanding experience.
