The story centers on Lincoln Clay, a biracial Vietnam War veteran returning home to find his place in a world that largely treats him as an outsider. Unlike previous protagonists who sought to climb the ranks of a pre-existing family, Lincoln is driven by the ashes of one. After his surrogate family, the Black Mob, is brutally betrayed and slaughtered by the Italian Marcano family, Lincoln’s mission isn't about power—it's about systematic destruction.

Lincoln is a powerhouse of a protagonist. His military background translates into a "tactical heft" in gameplay. Whether you are performing a "Brutal Takedown" or ghosting through a warehouse with a combat knife, you feel the weight of his training and his rage.

A City Divided

New Bordeaux is perhaps the game's most impressive character. The city is divided into ten distinct districts, from the swampy Bayou Fantom to the high-society glitz of Frisco Fields. What makes this world unique—and often uncomfortable—is its commitment to historical realism.

• The Police Presence: Law enforcement reacts differently depending on the neighborhood. In affluent white areas, the police arrive almost instantly. In poorer, minority districts, they may take their time, reflecting the systemic inequalities of the era.

• The Atmosphere: The air is thick with the sounds of a world-class soundtrack—featuring the likes of Jimi Hendrix and Creedence Clearwater Revival—clashing with the harsh reality of "Whites Only" signs and overheard slurs that ground the player in 1968.

Managing the Underworld: The Lieutenant System

To dismantle the Marcano empire, Lincoln must build his own. This introduces the Underboss System, where you manage three distinct lieutenants:

1. Cassandra: Leader of the Haitian Mob.

2. Vito Scaletta: The returning protagonist from Mafia II.

3. Thomas Burke: The hot-headed leader of the Irish Mob.

The brilliance of this mechanic lies in the balancing act. As you take over rackets (like construction, moonshine, or smuggling), you must decide which lieutenant to favor. Give too much to one, and the others may grow resentful, potentially leading to a bloody internal mutiny. This "metagame" adds a layer of diplomatic tension to the standard third-person shooting.

A Narrative Masterpiece

Despite some criticism regarding repetitive mission structures, the narrative remains a gold standard. The story is told through a faux-documentary style, featuring flash-forwards to depositions and interviews with Father James and CIA handler John Donovan. This framing device gives the events a sense of historical weight, making Lincoln’s journey feel like a dark chapter of American history rather than just a game.
