Mechajammer, released in 2021 by Whalenought Studios, is a turn-based tactical role-playing game that plunges players into a grim, cyberpunk-noir world. Heavily inspired by classic CRPGs and gritty 1980s sci-fi, the game emphasizes player freedom, immersive simulation, and brutal consequence, all set on the jungle colony planet of Calitana.

A Nightmare on Calitana

The protagonist crash-lands on Calitana, a planet dominated by dense, oppressive jungle and sprawling, dystopian urban complexes. The colony is a volatile mix of ruthless corporations, criminal syndicates, and oppressed citizens. The primary goal is simple: escape the planet. To do this, the player must navigate the treacherous, open-world city of Citadel, forming alliances, gathering resources, and constantly looking over their shoulder.

The game is known for its uncompromising atmosphere, achieved through lo-fi, pixelated graphics that evoke a sense of digital decay and isolation, perfectly complemented by a brooding, synth-heavy soundtrack. The entire experience feels like a forgotten, VHS-era computer game.

Turn-Based Immersion

Mechajammer employs a unique simultaneous turn-based combat system. Unlike typical turn-based games where players and enemies take discrete, alternating actions, all movement and actions happen at the same time. The game only progresses a "turn" when the player takes an action (moving one tile, attacking, interacting, etc.).

This system creates a continuous flow, but with strategic depth:

• Planning: Players must anticipate enemy moves and plan their actions—be it shooting, using stealth, or repositioning—before committing to the turn.

• Stealth and Sound: Noise and line-of-sight are critical. Loud actions like firing a gun can alert enemies several screens away, potentially escalating a quiet infiltration into a deadly firefight.

• Action Points (AP): Actions consume AP, adding another layer of resource management to every tactical decision.

Character and Skill Customization

Character creation is robust, allowing players to heavily customize their build through dozens of skills that determine success in and out of combat. Skills are broadly categorized:

The game's open-world nature means that every decision has a tangible consequence. Players recruit various NPCs (Companions) to their cause, ranging from mercenary thugs to tech specialists. Managing this crew is vital, as they are essential for surviving combat and utilizing their specific skill sets. The pervasive atmosphere of dread and scarcity, combined with the permanent death of companions and the high difficulty, forces players to think strategically, often turning to bribery and stealth over direct confrontation to maximize their chances of escape.
