River City Ransom: Underground (RCR:U) is a spiritual successor to the 1989 Nintendo Entertainment System classic, River City Ransom. Developed by Conatus Creative, it successfully resurrected the unique blend of open-world exploration, beat 'em up combat, and role-playing game (RPG) progression that made the original a cult hit. Released in 2017, the game is a massive expansion on the Kunio-kun universe, featuring an updated look and significantly deeper combat mechanics.

 Setting and Narrative

Set years after the events of the original, the game returns to River City, which is now facing a new wave of organized crime and gang warfare. The narrative centers on the familiar faces of Alex and Ryan (known as Kunio and Riki in Japan) who are wrongfully implicated in a crime. To clear their names, they must fight their way through the city's districts, uncovering the real culprits behind the recent chaos.

The game is characterized by its signature snarky humor, distinctive character portraits, and a plot that pays loving tribute to the classic brawler tropes of the late 80s and early 90s.

 Expanded Combat and RPG Systems

The most significant change from the original is the robust, modern fighting system. Where the original had simple punch, kick, and special moves, RCR:U offers depth comparable to contemporary fighting games:

• Muti-Character Roster: The game features a roster of ten playable characters (plus unlockables), each with their own unique fighting style, special moves, and skill trees. For instance, Alex retains his martial arts focus, while new characters introduce grappling, acrobatics, or even wrestling moves.

• Complex Controls: Combat involves complex inputs, including light and heavy attacks, blocks, dodges, launchers, and directional attacks. Players can chain these into impressive, satisfying combos reminiscent of games like Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game.

• RPG Progression: The core RPG element is intact and expanded. Players collect cash from defeated enemies, which is then used in various shops across River City. Cash can buy:

  • Stat-Boosting Food: Increases core attributes like Strength, Stamina, and Willpower.

  • New Moves: Essential new attacks and combos are purchased from Dojo shops, permanently adding them to the character's arsenal.

• Equipment: The ability to equip various items—from shoes and accessories to different shirts—adds passive bonuses and further character customization.

 Co-op and World

RCR:U is designed for cooperative play, supporting up to four players in local and online co-op. The sprawling, interconnected map of River City is much larger than the original, featuring distinct districts and numerous secrets. This expanded world is crucial for finding hidden shops, optional bosses, and unique items.

The game is a successful modern revival, marrying the nostalgic charm of its pixel art and humor with the deep, challenging combat expected from a modern brawler.
