Three Kingdoms HEROES is a turn-based battle board game developed by Koei Tecmo Games and HEROZ, Inc. (known for their Shogi AI). Released in early 2025, primarily on Apple Arcade, the game serves as a unique spin-off of the established Romance of the Three Kingdoms franchise. It abandons the traditional grand strategy and empire management of its predecessors in favor of a focused, intricate chess-like tactical puzzle.

The game is set during the fragmented Han Dynasty era, drawing on the famous generals and battles of Chinese history. However, the conflict is abstracted into intense, squad-based encounters where strategic positioning and character synergy are paramount.

Board Game Mechanics and Strategy

At its core, Three Kingdoms HEROES operates on a simple, turn-based grid system, but with surprising depth reminiscent of Japanese Chess (Shogi) or Chess itself:

• Distinct Movements: Each unit, modeled after a famous Three Kingdoms general (like Guan Yu or Cao Cao), acts as a unique piece on the board with specific movement patterns and attack ranges.

• No Stats: Crucially, the game does not rely on numerical stats like health points or attack power. Victory is determined purely by strategy and positioning—eliminating the opposing generals through tactical maneuver.

• Stratagems and Skills: Each general is equipped with special, powerful moves. These Stratagems and Skills—such as freezing enemy pieces, hitting multiple squares, or manipulating movement—are the equivalent of Super Moves and are key to breaking complex formations.

• Awakening and Morale: Players accumulate "Morale" points each turn, which can be spent to Awaken their pieces. An Awakened general gains increased movement range and access to more powerful abilities, adding a vital resource management layer to the turn-based action.

Challenging AI and Multiplayer

The game offers several modes catering to both solo practice and competitive play:

• Genius AI 'GARYU': The single-player experience features a custom-built AI named GARYU, developed by the same team that created the world-renowned Shogi AI, "dlshogi." GARYU is specifically tuned for tactical board warfare, offering difficulty levels from beginner to advanced, making it an excellent sparring partner for honing complex strategies.

• Story Mode: This mode guides players through famous historical episodes from the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, serving as both a narrative journey and a tutorial for mastering the game’s core rules.

• Multiplayer: The long-term value lies in its online competitive modes, where players can assemble their custom squads of heroes and compete against rivals in global Seasonal Matches or private matches.

By focusing on pure, strategic maneuvering and unique hero abilities rather than traditional 4X empire management, Three Kingdoms HEROES offers a simple-to-learn but difficult-to-master tactical challenge.
