It is the direct sequel to the highly successful Yomi and is available as both a physical tabletop card game and a digital video game (released in 2023/2025). Designed by David Sirlin, a former fighting game tournament player and lead designer on titles like Street Fighter HD Remix, Yomi 2 aims to perfectly capture the essence, psychology, and mechanics of a competitive fighting game in a format accessible to card game enthusiasts.

The game's name, "Yomi," is derived from the fighting game concept of "reading your opponent's mind"—making decisions based on anticipating their next move.

The Core Mechanics: Rock-Paper-Scissors with a Twist

At its heart, Yomi 2 uses a double-blind system where players simultaneously choose and reveal a card representing a fundamental fighting game action:

• Attacks (Strikes): Beat Throws, but are stopped by Blocks.

• Blocks/Dodges: Stop Attacks, but are beaten by Throws.

• Throws: Beat Blocks, but are stopped by Attacks.

This core rock-paper-scissors dynamic forces players into a constant state of psychological warfare. The primary goal is to predict your opponent’s choice, but the ultimate objective is to build a hand capable of executing devastating follow-up moves.

Combos, Super Moves, and Meter

Unlike simple card duels, Yomi 2 emphasizes the reward for successful hits:

• Combos: If a player lands an Attack, they have the opportunity to chain a series of attack cards from their hand to extend the damage. This hand management system transforms the game from a random guess into a calculated risk, as players constantly strive to hold the right sequence of cards.

• Super Meter: By discarding pairs of matching cards or landing chain combos, players build up a Super Meter. This resource is spent on powerful, often game-changing Super Moves that mirror the cinematic finishers of classic fighting games.

New Additions: Gems and Mix-ups

Yomi 2 refines the original concept with several key mechanics inspired by modern fighting games:

• Gems: Before a match, players select a Gem to augment their chosen character. Each Gem adds unique special moves, abilities, and a powerful, once-per-game "Gem Storm" that can swing the momentum, providing a layer of character customization and strategic variety.

• High and Low Attacks (Mix-ups): The game introduces the concept of high and low attacks, especially when an opponent is knocked down. This forces the opponent to choose between a high block or a low block, adding a new layer of risk and prediction common in high-level fighting game play.

• Exchange: Players can now exchange a card from their hand with one in their discard pile, offering more control over hand composition and making it easier to set up crucial combos.

With a roster of 20 characters, each with a unique, pre-built deck representing their fighting style (e.g., a "Zoner" with projectile cards or a "Grappler" with powerful throw options), Yomi 2 offers a deep, competitive experience for both solo play (with a dedicated single-player career mode) and head-to-head competition.
