War for the Overworld is a real-time strategy (RTS) and dungeon management game, widely regarded as the spiritual successor to the classic Dungeon Keeper series. Developed by Brightrock Games, it embraces the dark humor and core mechanics of its inspiration, casting the player as a malevolent Underlord tasked with conquering the realm of Kairos.

The game is a delightful inversion of traditional fantasy. Instead of guiding heroic adventurers, you delve deep into the underworld, excavating a dungeon from the barren earth. Your goal is to construct a subterranean fortress bristling with traps, rooms, and minions to thwart the "goodly" heroes of the Overworld. Core gameplay revolves around managing your dungeon's resources, expanding its territory by claiming subterranean land, and catering to the needs and moods of your varied, unholy workforce.

The Campaign mode places you under the command of the "mad god" Mendechaus (voiced by Richard Ridings, the original Dungeon Keeper narrator). Mendechaus orders your newly resurrected Underlord, Oberon (the silent protagonist), to invade the Underworld of the Empire of Kairos, a realm protected by the goddess Kira. Your dark crusade involves battling both the Empire's forces—heroes, champions, and even the deranged Emperor Lucius—as well as rival Underlords who have their own wicked agendas. The ultimate prize is the demonic artifact known as the Kenos, which is required to launch a final, decisive assault on the Empire's capital.

Gameplay is a hybrid experience. You utilize worker minions, the imps, to dig out rooms like the Barracks, Torture Chamber, and Library. These rooms attract and train various dark creatures, each with unique roles and needs. Combat is a real-time affair, where you direct your armies and unleash powerful magic, or "Sins," unlocked through a flexible research tree called the Veins of Evil.

The story culminates in a dramatic betrayal by Mendechaus, revealing a complex web of manipulation that transcends the simple good-versus-evil narrative. War for the Overworld successfully captures the essence of the forgotten dungeon management genre, offering multiple modes including Skirmish, Multiplayer, and the relaxed sandbox-style My Pet Dungeon, ensuring that being the bad guy never gets old.
